New York Attorney General Letitia James has instructed local hospitals to continue providing sex-change procedures for minors, stating that compliance with President Trump's executive order would violate state discrimination laws. In her letter to healthcare facilities, she emphasized that refusing services to transgender patients based on their gender identity constitutes discrimination under New York law.
James highlighted the importance of protecting the rights of individuals in various categories, including gender identity and sexual orientation. She warned hospitals that failing to provide transgender patients with the same care as others could lead to violations of state law. She encouraged anyone who notices potential violations to report them to her office.
Her statement comes after reports that several hospitals nationwide are limiting "gender-affirming care" to align with Trump's January 28 executive order. This order threatens to cut federal funding to hospitals that provide treatments, like puberty blockers and hormone therapy, to minors under 19. The White House claimed the order aims to protect children from harmful medical practices.
Some hospitals in states like Colorado, Virginia, and Illinois have started to reduce or eliminate transgender programs. New York City’s NYU Langone Health has also reportedly canceled appointments for minors seeking sex-change procedures. Families of children who were scheduled to receive puberty-blocking implants at NYU have expressed frustration after their appointments were abruptly canceled following the executive order.
James's directive has prompted a significant public response, with hundreds of protesters gathering near NYU Langone Health to express their opposition to Trump's executive order. Transgender activists at the protest called for widespread action against the order. This situation reflects the ongoing tensions surrounding discussions on transgender health care and rights at both federal and state levels, highlighting the conflict between state and federal policies regarding healthcare for transgender minors.
