A young man, referred to as "Beard," shared his experience working at a fraudulent call center in Dubai after fleeing Syria. He initially believed he had found a legitimate job but ended up in a scamming operation. The center was located in a remote area, and workers had their passports taken to keep them trapped. Beard participated in a large “pig butchering” scam, which involved deceiving victims into thinking they were in a romantic relationship online. He worked long hours, pretending to be a woman named Annie to swindle unsuspecting victims, many of whom were misled from dating apps.
Beard's role included extracting financial information to encourage victims to invest in cryptocurrency. The scam center employed over 1,000 workers, primarily from Africa and India, who were managed by a Chinese syndicate. There was a real woman present to reassure victims through brief video calls. Despite being part of the scam, Beard chose not to deceive anyone directly; instead, he stalled conversations and warned victims about the risks involved with cryptocurrency.
Inspired by a YouTube figure that exposes scams, Beard sent videos from inside the scam center and eventually tricked the scammers into letting him leave. After his departure, the scam center was shut down. Beard reflected that even though he was in an unethical situation, the basic living conditions kept workers from seeking legal employment.
