Nearly Half of Canadian Businesses Plan to Move Production to the U.S — 60% Are Looking for Business Acquisitions In Response to Trump Tariffs

A significant change is happening in Canada's business scene as President Trump's tariffs push companies to relocate to the U. S. Recently, Trump imposed heavy tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China to tackle issues like illegal immigration, drug trafficking, and trade imbalances. This includes a 25% tariff on all goods from Canada and Mexico, with a specific 10% tariff on Canadian energy exports and a 10% tariff on imports from China.

A KPMG survey reveals that nearly half of Canadian businesses (48%) are planning to shift production or investments to the United States to remain competitive, and 60% are considering acquisitions in the U. S. market. Before Trump's administration, many companies were already preparing for these changes; 65% took proactive steps before he took office, such as shipping goods to the U. S. to avoid sudden cost increases.

Lucy Iacovelli, a managing partner at KPMG, states that the U. S. government’s economic policies are significantly affecting Canada and the world. She emphasizes the need for Canadian businesses to get ready for trade challenges and higher costs, encouraging them to understand their risks and create strategies to manage them.

The economic policies of the Trudeau government have pressured Canadian businesses, leading them to seek a more favorable environment in the U. S. The survey also shows that 86% of Canadian business leaders view Trump's tariffs as a call to improve productivity.

Significantly, 89% of these leaders support stronger Canadian border security to meet U. S. concerns, and 85% are in favor of increased military spending, especially for Arctic defense and NORAD to address U. S. and NATO worries.

In conclusion, nearly half of Canadian businesses are now looking to move investments or production to the U. S. due to President Trump’s tariffs, and many are preparing for potential downturns and disruptions in their trade relationships, advocating for national security measures.
