China Reportedly Preparing Trade Talks With Trump After Weekend Tariff Shock

Just two weeks into his second term, President Trump announced new tariffs as part of his trade war, imposing a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada, with a 10% tariff on imports from China. This announcement surprised many, including world leaders and Wall Street, but it caught China's attention.

Reports suggest that China is preparing for trade talks with the Trump administration to restore a previous trade agreement and promised not to devalue the yuan to boost its global trade position. China aims to discuss reviving the Phase One deal, which required it to purchase $200 billion in American goods over two years, although it had not fulfilled this commitment previously.

China's proposal may include plans to buy more from the US, invest in American industries such as electric car batteries, commit to preventing currency devaluation, and reduce exports of fentanyl precursors. Beijing views the new tariffs as a method for Trump to push negotiations forward, although China reacted with strong dissatisfaction and hinted at possible countermeasures.

The negative impact of the trade war is a concern for Beijing, with estimates suggesting Trump's 10% tariff could lower China’s GDP by 0. 3 to 0. 4 percentage points. The tariffs raise the effective tariff rates in the US significantly, with Canada and Mexico facing potential GDP hits of 2. 5% and 3. 5%, respectively, under full tariff conditions.

Prediction markets have increased the likelihood of further tariff increases as Trump's tariffs are aimed at motivating trading partners to address unfair trade practices and the flow of fentanyl precursors into the US, which has resulted in significant fatalities.
