The website of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) was taken offline, reportedly due to plans by the Trump administration to reduce its independence by placing it directly under the State Department's control. The site displayed an error message indicating it couldn't be reached. Sources suggested a significant change in how US foreign aid will be allocated, with USAID expected to lose autonomy.
On the same day, a simplified page for USAID appeared on the State Department's website. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed concern on social media about rumors that Trump might dissolve USAID, noting it was created to support national security and spread hope, and hinted this move could be illegal.
Trump’s administration has been critical of USAID, claiming that taxpayer money was being misused. Recently, many USAID employees were placed on leave for allegedly ignoring Trump's orders, and the administration froze foreign aid programs in an effort to reform how aid is distributed. Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency account criticized USAID for perceived wasteful spending.
A journalist suggested that USAID serves as a front for the CIA, using US tax dollars improperly. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller claimed that a large majority of USAID employees support left-wing political candidates. Funding for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) reliant on USAID is expected to diminish, especially those allegedly involved in left-wing censorship and political actions around the world.
