During an interview with Bloomberg Television, guest Jeffrey Sachs attributed the recent attack on the Nord Stream gas pipelines to the United States, puncturing the narrative that the incident was propagated by Putin's Russia.
Sachs - the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University and President of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network - made the claim during an October 3rd appearance.
"I would bet was a U.S. action, perhaps U.S. and Poland," he began, before the host interjected, inquiring with Sachs what evidence he had to support his theory.
" Sorry, it's a strange way to talk if you're worried about piracy on international infrastructure of vital significance," Sachs added.
"And ultimately this is also a tremendous opportunity. It's a tremendous opportunity to once and for all remove the dependence on Russian energy and thus to take away from Vladimir Putin the weaponization of energy as a means of advancing his imperial designs. That's very significant and that offers tremendous strategic opportunity for the years to come."
Sachs's on-air comments follow Tucker Carlson making similar claims, though mainstream media outlets criticized the Fox News host for echoing Russian propaganda and talking points.
Sachs's controversial comments on Bloomberg also follow him leading the highly scrutinized Lancet COVID-19 working group, which worked to silence proponents of the "Lab leak" origins theory.
