Washington fertilizer plant burns to the ground; locals told to “shelter in place” due to air pollution

Following the explosion and fire at the Wilbur Ellis fertilizer plant in Grant County, Washington, residents are being advised to use air purifiers and wait.

  • Because of the nature of the chemicals used and produced at the plant, the Grant County Health District has issued a health advisory for people living downwind (north-east) from the fire.

Why are so many fertilizer plants mysteriously catching fire?

  • Very little water was used to put out the fire due to the presence of fertilizer chemicals
  • Extra care was taken to avoid having those chemicals end up seeping into underground water tables and ecosystems
  • An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fire, which is just one of many that have occurred in recent months, also under mysterious circumstances
