NJ gov race: Possible recount as Murphy, Ciattarelli neck and neck

New Jersey's neck-and-neck gubernatorial race could be headed to a recount - as Democrat Phil Murphy and Republican Jack Ciattarelli remain in a dead heat and less than 500 votes apart the day after the polls closed.

"Apparently gubernatorial candidates are able to request a recount in New Jersey, regardless of the margin. We'll see if Ciattarelli does this - Murphy may expand his lead a decent amount by the time the remaining votes are counted," Inside Elections analyst Ryan Matsumoto tweeted.

The recount requesters must pay for the recount themselves, though if any errors found in the recount change the election by more than 10 votes or 10 percent of the total vote cast - whichever is greater - the requesters will be refunded.

As of Wednesday morning, Murphy and Ciattarelli remained neck and neck, both holding around 49.6 percent of the total vote.

Early voting and absentee ballots that have yet to be counted are expected to sway towards Murphy as Democratic voters led early voting with 64.2 percent of the vote, compared to the 30.1 percent held by Republicans, according to TargetEarly.

Despite trailing in the polls, the 59-year-old performed well in multiple key counties - including in Ocean County, where Ciattarelli took 68 percent of the vote and surpassed Christie's vote count.

Murphy echoed similar sentiments, saying, "We're gonna have to wait a little while we're gonna wait for every vote to be counted, and that's how our democracy works."New Jersey's race came the same day as another heavily anticipated gubernatorial election in Virginia.
