Here is a bit of relevant information that helps put the political left's gun control narrative in perspective.  The founders installed the 1st and 2nd Amendments in that order on purpose because the reasons for their successful victory in the Revolutionary War over an overbearing central government were still fresh in their minds. The dictatorial British government refused to either acknowledge or listen to their rightful grievances.  The founders knew first hand why having an armed citizenry against such tyranny is required. Throughout history leftist dictators, communists and socialists tyrants have always first disarmed citizens before putting the hammer down with their oppressive control of the them. There are a number of reasons for our current sad state of affairs. Here is a quote from the Religion and Politics web site: "On June 25, 1962, the United States Supreme Court decided in Engel v. Both decisions ultimately changed the face of American civil society, and in turn, helped usher in the last half-century of the culture wars."  Just two years later in 1964 progressive Democrat President Lyndon Johnson spearheaded the passage of the Civil Rights act.  Among other things it started the cascading destruction of the family unit, especially black families. Tax benefits were given to single parent homes.  The demise of two parent homes and strong family units was underway. The consequences of these stabilizing factors devastated stable family units which had long instilled moral values and needed developmental guidance for the young. There is more. Prior to 1980 the US had the second highest rated education system in the world.  That was the year progressive Democrat president Jimmy Carter established the federal Department of Education.  That was an unconstitutional act since the Constitution does not grant presidential administrations any responsibility for education. Once in control of education however relevant educational coverage of American history and civics began to be removed from the curriculum and what remains is altered to fit progressive narratives that promote big government.  Distorted/revised history and eliminating any discussion of the vital role citizen's play in controlling an irresponsible government is absent from the curriculum. Leftist's socialistic narratives now dominate social science classes in both K-12 and higher education. In the last international assessment the US had fallen in rank to 17th in educational achievement. There is more to the story but the above serves as an outline.  Gun control has been a long established goal of America's political left.  The above narrative highlighted steps taken to set the stage for the currant furor over gun control (and more).  By progressive/left wing design people no longer understand the purpose of both the 1st and 2d Amendments to the Constitution. There is little to no understanding of the reasons for freedom of speech rights and the right to bear arms. This is a consequence of the purposeful progressive Democrat's long term dumbing down of the American public.  Hollywood and the mainstream media are co-conspirators. And, it is why it is now possible for them to manipulate an uneducated and misguided public to facilitate their goal of controlling speech (political correctness) and seek the elimination of guns for their political purposes to undermine the Constitution in pursuit of their dream of a socialist state with them having dictatorial control.  That in a nut shell is why we are where we are and how we got here.
