The story is familiar to anyone who’s been awake for the past three decades, a nerdy Harvard dropout builds Microsoft, becomes the richest man on Earth, then dedicates his fortune to saving the world. It’s the ultimate redemption arc. The villain of the browser wars, reborn as a saint in a sweater vest.
But redemption arcs make for good PR, not good analysis. When you follow the money really follow it a different picture emerges. Not of a philanthropist, but of an architect. A man who didn’t retire from power but simply changed its mechanism.
