Energy Secretary: Backup Generators At Commercial Sites Could Unlock 35 Nuclear Plants

Energy Secretary Chris Wright has proposed a unique solution to enhance the U. S. electricity grid capacity by utilizing existing industrial diesel generators located at commercial sites, such as data centers and retailers.

• The proposal aims to address increased power demand due to the growth of data centers, which has stressed regional grids.

• Wright estimates that these idled generators could provide the electricity equivalent of about 35 nuclear power plants (35 gigawatts), acting as a temporary solution until new energy sources, including natural gas and nuclear power, become available.

• Historically, strict pollution regulations have limited the usage of these generators, but Wright emphasizes the importance of communicating their availability.

• The growing demand for electricity from data centers is projected to reach 57 gigawatts by 2025-2028, highlighting a significant power shortfall.

• Wright's approach could mitigate the immediate power needs for the data center boom while new generation capabilities are developed in the coming years.

Leveraging existing diesel generators presents a creative strategy to alleviate current energy demands and support future growth in technology and data centers.
