Lawmakers introduce bills to slash their own pay during government shutdowns

The ongoing U. S. government shutdown, which began on October 1, has prompted lawmakers to propose bills aimed at making Congress face financial consequences similar to those experienced by federal workers.

• The shutdown resulted from Senate Democrats blocking a Republican funding bill, leading to furloughs for hundreds of thousands of federal workers, with many others working without pay in essential roles.

• Congress members continue to receive their salaries despite the shutdown, prompting some to request salary withholding as a gesture of goodwill.

• Senator John Kennedy introduced the Withhold Member Pay During Shutdowns Act, proposing salary cuts for Congress members equivalent to the duration of the shutdown.

• Similar proposals include Sen. Lindsey Graham's amendment to eliminate pay during shutdowns, with funds redirected to the Treasury.

• In the House, various acts have been introduced, such as the No Work, No Pay Act by Rep. Mike Kennedy and the No Pay for Disarray Act by Rep. Angie Craig, aimed at ensuring members do not get paid during shutdowns.

• Rep. Frederica Wilson's act extends this proposal to include the president and vice president.

• Despite these proposals, negotiations to resolve the shutdown are stalled, with Democrats and Republicans at an impasse over budgetary issues.

Lawmakers are actively seeking to hold themselves financially accountable for government shutdowns, but bipartisan cooperation to resolve the shutdown remains elusive.
