UN delivers final nail in the coffin of 2015 Iran nuclear deal, set to impose snapback sanctions

The United Nations Security Council voted to reimpose sanctions on Iran by the end of the month, effectively ending the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). This decision follows President Trump's withdrawal from the deal in 2018, U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities, and the invocation of the JCPOA’s “snapback” mechanism by other signatories due to Iran’s non-compliance. The sanctions aim to pressure Iran into genuine nuclear negotiations, though Iran has reacted defiantly, threatening to withdraw from the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty and suspend interim inspection agreements. The reimposed sanctions, including arms embargoes and restrictions on nuclear and ballistic missile programs, add to Iran’s challenges, compounded by U.S. "maximum pressure" policies and weakened regional proxies like Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis.

UN Sanctions Reimposed: The UN Security Council voted to restore pre-2015 sanctions on Iran, including arms embargoes, ballistic missile restrictions, and asset freezes, following the JCPOA’s collapse.

JCPOA Snapback Mechanism: Invoked by signatories (UK, France, Germany) after Iran breached uranium enrichment limits and expanded centrifuge capacity post-2018 U.S. withdrawal.

U.S. and Israeli Strikes: American bombing raids and Israeli strikes severely damaged Iran’s nuclear facilities, setting its program back decades, with no current path to enrich uranium.

Pressure for Diplomacy: The U.S. and allies view sanctions as a tool to push Iran toward serious nuclear negotiations, not an end goal.

Iran’s Defiance: Iran called the sanctions “unlawful,” threatening to exit the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty and halt nuclear inspections.

European Stance: The E3 rejected Iran’s proposal to delay sanctions for resumed talks, with French President Macron deeming Iran’s offers insincere.

Russia’s Support for Iran: Russia criticized the E3 for violating JCPOA procedures and accused them of rejecting diplomacy in favor of coercion.

Weakened Iranian Proxies: U.S. and Israeli actions have diminished Iran’s regional influence by targeting Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis, with notable ceasefires and reduced threats.

U.S. Policy Continuity: President Trump’s “maximum pressure” strategy, including strikes on nuclear sites and proxies, aims to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions and regional power.
