DHS Terminates 2021 Temporary Protected Status for Venezuelans

On September 3, 2023, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the revocation of temporary protected status (TPS) for Venezuelan nationals in the U. S., which was set to expire on September 10. This status will officially end 60 days after its publication in the Federal Register. DHS officials stated that they no longer believe Venezuelan nationals qualify for TPS due to Venezuela's contribution to irregular migration.

• The revoked TPS was initially granted to Venezuelans under the Biden administration in 2021, which allowed them to stay temporarily because of unsafe conditions in Venezuela.

• U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) spokesperson Matthew Tragesser emphasized that maintaining TPS for Venezuelans conflicts with efforts to secure the U. S. southern border and manage migration.

• Approximately 348,202 Venezuelan nationals were granted TPS during Biden’s tenure due to “extraordinary conditions” in Venezuela.

• A recent Supreme Court decision blocked the Trump administration’s earlier cancellation of TPS, but DHS has now moved to terminate it.

• Venezuelans leaving the U. S. are encouraged to use the CBP Home app for self-deportation benefits, including a free plane ticket and a $1,000 exit bonus.

In conclusion, the end of TPS for Venezuelans marks a significant change in U. S. immigration policy regarding Venezuelan nationals amid ongoing debates about national security and immigration reform.
