In light of various ongoing issues such as the Russia-Ukraine war and economic challenges, public opinion on Donald Trump's leadership is notably divided. The I&I/TIPP Poll reveals mixed feelings among Americans regarding Trump's performance as President.
• Overall Favorability: In September 2025, 43% of Americans felt Trump’s leadership was favorable, while 47% viewed it unfavorably. The poll included 1,362 adults and had a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points. Among Republicans, 78% rated him favorably, contrasted with only 16% of Democrats.
• Approval Ratings: Similar to favorability, 43% approved of Trump's job performance, with a corresponding 47% disapproving. Republicans showed strong approval, while Democrats and independents largely disapproved.
• Strength of Leadership: Regarding the strength of Trump's leadership, 41% described it as strong or very strong, compared to 39% who viewed it as weak or very weak. This perception varied widely across political lines, with Republicans generally seeing him as a strong leader.
• TIPP Presidential Leadership Index: This index measures public sentiment and showed a score of 48.5 in September, indicating slight pessimism overall. Republicans were the most optimistic (83.0), while Democrats were the least (18.5).
• Policy Performance Grades: Trump received an overall grade of 40% (A or B) for his policy handling. His highest ratings were in border security (45%), crime (41%), and restoring core values (38%). The lowest were related to healthcare (32%) and handling international conflicts (ranging from 33% to 34%).
• Media Coverage Impact: Research indicated that a significant amount of media coverage of Trump has been negative, with reports showing 92% of his coverage by major networks was unfavorable. This perception likely influences public opinion.
Despite negative media portrayal and opposition from Democrats, Trump's leadership ratings remain resilient. Many Americans, facing various challenges, seem to be looking for decisive leadership, which Trump embodies in their view. The findings indicate a stark divide in public opinion, reflective of broader political and demographic divisions.
