Fees going to EV and public transit, not fixing the roads

Colorado's roads are in poor condition, largely due to a shift in funding away from road maintenance toward public transportation and electric vehicle programs.

• A report titled “The Ongoing Shift of Transportation Dollars” by Ben Stein highlights the misallocation of transportation funds in Colorado.

• Despite increasing transportation fees generating over $200 million, only a small portion is used for road improvements.

• The report indicates that most funds have been diverted to environmental initiatives and mass transit, aligned with Gov. Jared Polis’ Transportation Vision 2035, which aims to lower emissions.

• Stein argues that Colorado’s geography makes mass transit an ineffective solution for transportation needs.

• Funds for infrastructure are insufficient due to inflation and the redirection of funds, leading to inadequate maintenance and expansion of the highway system.

• Colorado ranks poorly in roadway conditions, sitting 47th for rural and 45th for urban highway pavement.

There is a need for a statewide discussion to inform Coloradans about the actual allocation of their transportation fees and to prioritize their preferences regarding environmental initiatives versus road conditions.
