Russia Is Militarily Dominating The Arctic, Working With China, As US Slips Behind

A recent report from the Wall Street Journal highlights Russia's growing control over the Arctic, aided by cooperation with China, while the United States falls behind.

• Arctic as a Neutral Zone: Historically, the Arctic was seen as politically neutral, with past US-Russian cooperation on fisheries and environmental issues.

• Shift in Dynamics: Following the Russia-Ukraine war and US sanctions, a competitive race for Arctic dominance has intensified. China is helping Russia in this effort.

• Geographical Advantage: Russia has the largest population in the Arctic region, bolstering its claims and military presence.

• Military Bases: While NATO has more military sites overall, Russia's bases are larger. As of 2024, Russia has 32 "continuously attended military sites" in the Arctic. NATO member Norway has 15, while the US has 10.

• Potential Conflict: Russian military leaders foresee potential future conflicts in the Arctic due to increasing military activities.

• China-Russia Cooperation: Chinese firms are heavily investing in Russian energy projects, and Russia is using shadow fleets to transport oil to China despite sanctions.

• Growing Trade: Shipping volumes along the Northern Sea Route have significantly increased, mostly headed for China, although navigation remains challenging due to ice.

As tensions rise in the Arctic, there's hope that the new administration can foster cooperation between the US and Russia to maintain peace in the region rather than allowing it to become a conflict zone.
