Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that the DOGE team, led by Elon Musk, will work on making quick safety improvements to the air traffic control system. This decision follows recent aviation disasters.
1. Air Traffic Safety Upgrades:
Duffy stated that the DOGE team will "plug in" to help modernize the aviation system to prevent accidents.
2. Recent Accidents:
• On January 29, a Black Hawk helicopter collided with an American Airlines flight near Reagan National Airport, resulting in 67 fatalities. Staffing at the control tower was inadequate at that time.
• A small plane crashed two nights later, creating a fireball, with personal tragedy involved as it was carrying a girl recovering from medical treatment.
• Another incident occurred on the ground when a Japan Air flight clipped a Delta flight.
3. System Outages:
On February 1, the FAA's primary NOTAM system failed temporarily. This outage highlighted the need for improvements.
The DOGE team, consisting of young tech professionals, will examine government operations for inefficiencies and focus on enhancing air traffic safety systems with the backing of political leaders, including President Trump.
