The final resolution of the Communist Party of China’s 20th National Congress spelled out that the national armed forces will continue to be modernized and expanded with an eye toward preventing Taiwan independence
- While praising efforts over the past half-decade of Beijing devoting great energy to modernizing its “national defense and armed forces,” the CPC called for “resolute steps to oppose ‘Taiwan independence’ and promote reunification, maintain the initiative and the ability to steer in cross-Strait relations, and unswervingly advance the cause of national reunification.”
In his speech, Xi made it clear that he meant Hong Kong and Taiwan to be next.
- "We must enhance the military's strategic capabilities for defending China's sovereignty, security, and development interests and see that the people's armed forces effectively fulfill their missions and tasks in the new era," he said.
