Why Progressive Policies May Have Just Cost 14 Students Their Lives

Backers of the plan thought it was "Saving the lives of kids," but it turns out that the "Broward County Solution" - the same Broward County where 17 people lost their lives - may have contributed to the tragedy.

So rather than attack the delinquency at the source, officials decided to solve the problem of too many arrests this way: Lower arrests by not making arrests.

School officials decided that 12 misdemeanor offenses - when committed on school grounds - would no longer be considered police matters.

In 2011-12, Broward County officers made 1,062 school-related arrests.

There was a massive disparity between the arrests of white and Asianstudents and students who were black or Hispanic.

Under the policy, school officials at Marjory Stoneman Douglas would likely not reporting his criminal behavior to police.

It is possible that if these policies - not arresting for "Minor" criminal incidents - were not in place, we might have caught Cruz sooner? We'll never know.
