Many of us watched some of the 67th Annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial
Foundation Dinner, particularly as President Obama and Governor Romney
traded humorous barbs.
Throughout the various speakers, we kept hearing the name “Al Smith” repeated with reverence as though he were there in the audience ... and perhaps he was .... or at least his legacy certainly was.
And what is that legacy, aside from being a multi-term Democratic Governor of New York and a Democratic Presidential candidate of the United States?
It was his 1936 speech, “Betrayal of the Democratic Party” when he sternly admonished his own Political Party.
If Governor Smith were alive today, he would be even more vociferous in denouncing the current Democratic Party, which is hardly a shadow of the Democratic Party that he was admonishing more than 75 years ago.
Nonetheless, please read his speech and note how Governor Romney today sounds more like Governor Smith of yesteryear.
Gov. Smith could just as easily being talking about the current Democratic Party and President regarding .... “the vast building up of new bureaus of government, draining resources of our people in a common pool of redistributing them, not by any process of law, but by the whim of a bureaucratic autocracy,” etc. (can you say czars?)
From Gov. Smith’s speech: “Make a test for yourself. Just get the platform of the Democratic Party, and get the platform of the Socialist Party, and lay them down on your dining room table, side by side, and get a heavy lead pencil and scratch out the word “Democrat,” and scratch out the word “Socialist,” and let the two platforms lay there .... “
