Wisconsin’s historic recall election will be closely watched by special agents to ensure integrity at the polls.
State Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen on Saturday announced the state Department of Justice will send assistant attorneys general and special agents from the Division of Criminal Investigation to polling sites around the state on Tuesday. The law enforcers will assist local election officials to ensure compliance with state election laws.
“The June recall election is a significant event in our state’s history. The people of Wisconsin need to have confidence that their rights are being protected and the laws are being followed,” Van Hollen said in a statement.
Election laws haven’t always been followed in Wisconsin, although election fraud is an extreme rarity in the Badger State.
A special investigation by Wisconsin Reporter last August found nearly 1,000 probable deceased individuals on the Statewide Voter Registration System.
A second Wisconsin Reporter investigation found a total of 166 probable deceased names on the voter list in the Senate districts targeted in the August 2011 election of recalled Republican senators.
It appears none of those names showed up on cast ballots.
