Spanberger’s Spectacular Gerrymandering Faceplant

Virginia Democrats, led by Governor Abigail Spanberger, celebrated after voters approved an amendment that allowed a major redistricting of congressional districts. However, this decision was soon overturned by the Virginia Supreme Court, highlighting issues of political integrity and the legality of the referendum.

• On April 21, Virginia voters approved an amendment for redistricting, moving from a balanced map of 6 Democrats to 5 Republicans to a heavily Democratic map of 10 Democrats to 1 Republican.

• Governor Abigail Spanberger, who had previously criticized gerrymandering, reversed her stance to benefit her party’s power in Congress.

• The Virginia Supreme Court (SCOVA) later nullified the referendum, stating that the process violated the Virginia Constitution.

• Justice D. Arthur Kelsey confirmed that the vote was tainted due to this constitutional violation, dismissing claims of the governance reflecting the will of the people.

• Former Governor Glenn Youngkin condemned Spanberger and her allies for trying to deceive voters and manipulate the redistricting process.

• Following the ruling, an injunction was put in place to block certification of the referendum, and the Democrats' appeal to the U. S. Supreme Court is uncertain, as state law primarily governs the issue.

• Constitutional experts indicate that the Supreme Court is unlikely to intervene in state matters, reinforcing that the final decision lies with the Virginia Supreme Court.

• The Democratic move was viewed as a desperate act and ultimately alienated a significant portion of Virginia's electorate.

The hope among Virginia Democrats quickly turned to disappointment with the Supreme Court ruling against their gerrymandering efforts. This situation raises concerns about political ethics, the treatment of voters, and the implications for future elections as the Democratic establishment grapples with the repercussions of their quest for power.
