New England electricity prices among the highest nationwide

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) released the Energy Affordability 2026 report, revealing that New England residents pay some of the highest electricity prices in the United States. The report compares prices and energy affordability across all 50 states, with North Dakota and Louisiana identified as the most affordable.

• State Rankings: Vermont (41), Maine (42), New Hampshire (44), Massachusetts (46), Rhode Island (47), and Connecticut (48) rank among the 10 states with the highest electricity costs. New York (43), Alaska (45), California (49), and Hawaii (50) complete the list.

• Electricity Costs: At the report's cut-off, Connecticut had an average rate of 24.37 cents per kilowatt-hour, Maine at 19.66 cents, Massachusetts at 23.94 cents, New Hampshire at 20.61 cents, Rhode Island at 24.15 cents, and Vermont at 18.41 cents.

• Energy Sources: Most states in this region primarily use natural gas and nuclear power. Renewable energy sources are also being integrated into their portfolios with specific standards for future renewability.

• Recommendations: ALEC suggests clearer policies focusing on affordability and reliable energy production to help reduce costs and improve stability of the electricity grid.

The report highlights significant energy cost issues in New England, indicating a need for strategic changes in energy policies to enhance affordability, reliability, and sustainability in electricity generation.
