Black gold gushes into California as offshore bill kicks into gear following Trump executive order

The Santa Ynez Pipeline System off California's coast has resumed oil flow after being inactive for over a decade. This change came following an executive order from President Donald Trump, aimed at addressing national security concerns and increasing domestic oil supply in California.

• Resumption of Operations: Oil began flowing again through the Santa Ynez Pipeline System on March 16, 2026. The pipeline transports oil from the Santa Barbara area to Kern County.

• Executive Order: President Trump issued the order under the Defense Production Act, which granted emergency powers for the oil supply's restart, claiming it was necessary for national security.

• Gavin Newsom's Response: California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the move, labeling it as an attempt to illegally restart a pipeline with operators facing criminal charges and legal orders against resuming operations.

• Company's Position: Sable, the company operating the pipeline, announced its commitment to comply with the executive order and aims to increase oil supply by 17% for California consumers.

• Legal and Environmental Concerns: The company reportedly has about 540,000 barrels of crude oil in storage and plans to start selling 50,000 barrels per day starting April 1, 2026. Environmental advocates expressed distress over the potential for future oil spills, recalling a significant one in 2015 that halted operations previously.

The restart of the Santa Ynez Pipeline System has sparked controversy, with state officials and environmentalists expressing concerns about the legal and ecological implications. As the oil company prepares to resume full production, critics urge state officials to continue fighting against offshore drilling to protect California's coastline and wildlife.
