How a tech-savvy officer finally cracked the Jan. 6 pipe-bombs case

Dan Bongino, a former conservative podcaster, previously claimed the FBI was hiding evidence about the individuals behind the pipe bombs placed near the Capitol on January 6, 2021. However, after becoming the FBI's deputy director, he discovered that the alleged evidence was overlooked due to investigative challenges.

• Initial Claims and Discovery: Bongino accused the FBI of concealing information suggesting an "inside job." He later learned that the FBI had not accessed important cellphone data from T-Mobile US for four years because they couldn’t decode it.

• Breakthrough in Investigation: A tech-savvy officer developed software that deciphered the previously unreadable data, which ultimately led to the arrest of Brian Cole Jr., who had been living quietly in Northern Virginia.

• Investigation Details: The FBI conducted extensive searches, analyzing digital footprints related to explosive materials. They reviewed thousands of Home Depot purchases and attempted to identify online searches for bomb-making instructions.

• Unsuccessful Leads: Despite different investigative methods, including undercover work and surveillance, the FBI struggled to find a suspect until the cellphone data was finally decoded.

• Connection to Suspect: Once investigators accessed the T-Mobile data, they linked Cole’s cellphone movements to the locations seen in surveillance footage of the bomb placement.

• Arrest and Admission: Cole confessed to placing the bombs during an interview with investigators. His purchases matched the components needed to create the devices and reflected his support for Trump and conspiracy theories regarding the 2020 election.

The FBI's breakthrough in understanding and analyzing cellphone data led to a significant arrest and resolution in the case concerning the pipe bombs from January 6. This development contradicted earlier conspiracy theories about an FBI cover-up, prompting a reevaluation of Bongino's previous claims. Following the arrest, Bongino acknowledged the shift in perspective from being a podcaster to his factual role within the FBI.
