U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Vows to Prosecute Individuals Who Targeted Musk’s DOGE Employees

Edward Martin, the acting U. S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, announced intentions to prosecute anyone who targeted employees of Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Following a report by Wired that revealed the identities of six DOGE employees, social media threats soon emerged against them, with some posts calling for violence.

Martin stated that they are coordinating with the FBI and other law enforcement agencies to take swift action. He reassured Musk in a letter that his office would pursue legal measures against those obstructing or threatening DOGE workers and emphasized their commitment to protecting them, contrasting his approach with the previous administration’s leniency towards protests.

Musk expressed gratitude towards Martin in a post. The U. S. attorney's tough stance comes after incidents where USAID officials attempted to deny DOGE access to classified information. Some USAID officials were placed on administrative leave for not granting access, while reports indicated that DOGE teams eventually did receive some classified materials.

In a related situation, a Treasury Department official tried to prevent DOGE's access to the federal payment system but was also put on leave. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent later authorized DOGE employees to monitor government spending, granting them necessary access. In response, the American Federation of Government Employees and other unions filed a lawsuit to block DOGE from accessing Treasury data.
