Trump’s Executive Orders Have Solid Voter Backing

President Trump began his second term in office with many executive orders on various topics, and the public response has generally been positive, according to an I&I/TIPP Poll. The poll surveyed 1,478 adults nationwide and revealed that most Americans, apart from Democrats, supported Trump's orders meant to set a new direction for U. S. policy.

The survey asked whether participants supported or opposed 12 key executive actions taken by Trump in his first week. Four of these actions received majority support: deploying the military to secure the southern border (57% support), banning federal funding for gender identity programs (53% support), requiring federal workers to return to the office full-time (56% support), and speeding up deportations of illegal immigrants (54% support).

Other actions gained plurality support but fell short of majority approval. These included ending birthright citizenship for children of illegal aliens (49% support), declaring a national energy emergency to boost oil and gas production excluding wind and solar (46% support), eliminating diversity and inclusion programs in the federal government (45% support), making it easier to fire federal employees (44% support), and pausing a law banning TikTok for 75 days (44% support).

However, three actions had more people opposing them than supporting: withdrawing from the World Health Organization (WHO), pardoning January 6 participants, and withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement. The responses to these issues highlighted a stark difference between Democrats and Republicans, with Democrats showing much less support for Trump's actions.

The average support from Democrats for Trump’s executive orders was just 26. 5%, with opposition at 61. 8%. In contrast, GOP support for Trump’s measures averaged 71. 4%, with only 16. 3% opposed. Independent voters showed moderate support, averaging 42. 9%, with nearly equal opposition at 40. 8%.

Overall, the poll indicates strong support for Trump’s executive orders, particularly among Republicans, though this support diminishes among Democrats and left-leaning voters. In light of the political landscape, the data suggests that the electorate has shifted to the right since the previous election.

Moreover, Trump's success in winning the 2024 presidential election is attributed to a significant movement against the Democratic Party. This shift might explain the rising acceptance of executive orders as a way to enact immediate change. Unlike congressional actions, executive orders allow a president to change policies without needing legislative approval, making them a powerful tool for any administration.

In Trump's case, he has shown a willingness to use executive orders to fulfill campaign promises quickly, emphasizing a desire for decisive action from the new administration. Even media critics have noted the effectiveness and efficiency of Trump's early executive actions.

As the country exits the COVID-19 lockdown phase, popular support for Trump’s actions appears to reflect a broader public desire for political change after years of federal spending and other contentious policies. Reports from various media outlets have recognized the impact of Trump's executive orders on key issues affecting the nation since his inauguration.
