The National Assessment of Educational Regress

Recent reports reveal that American children continue to perform poorly in reading and math, raising concerns about the state of education. With alarming results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress, the call for school choice as a potential solution is gaining traction.

1. Poor Test Results:

The latest NAEP tests show a decline in reading skills among American students. 4th graders' reading scores decreased from 35% at or above proficiency in 2019 to 31% in 2024. Furthermore, 40% of 4th graders tested at "below basic," marking the highest percentage in 20 years. For 8th graders, 33% scored below basic, a record low.

2. Consequences of Declining Skills:

Poor reading skills are linked to negative outcomes, including lower high school graduation rates and higher incarceration risks. A sizable study indicated that students not reading at grade level by third grade are four times more likely to drop out of school.

3. Possible Causes:

While some attribute the decline to insufficient funding, with calls for community schools and smaller class sizes, skeptics point out that over $190 billion was spent on pandemic recovery support to schools with little impact on test scores. Other suggested causes include increased screen time and social media use among students.

4. School Choice Movement:

During National School Choice Week, the expansion of parental freedom in education gained attention. New and expanded school choice programs were enacted in several states, aiming to provide families with more options. As of 2024, over one million students participate in private school choice programs, with the trend rapidly increasing since 2020.

5. Diverse Education Options:

The current educational landscape shows that 2. 2% of students attend private schools through choice programs, while 6. 8% are enrolled privately through other means. Approximately 3. 2 million students are homeschooled. Catholic school students have shown better performance than their peers in traditional public schools.

6. Government Support for Choice:

Recent directives from President Trump aim to prioritize school choice programs at the federal level, signaling a push towards educational alternatives. A survey indicated that a significant portion of parents is exploring different schools for their children, with 60% considering alternatives last year. Black parents were particularly inclined to seek out new options.

7. Critique of Traditional Education Models:

Critics argue that teachers’ unions' claims against school choicesuch as lack of accountability and burdening taxpayersare unfounded. Public sentiment appears to be shifting in favor of exploring and embracing school choice options.

The declining educational standards demonstrated by recent NAEP results highlight the urgent need for reform in the American education system. With increasing support for school choice and a growing number of families advocating for alternative education paths, there is hope for improving student outcomes. The continued expansion of such programs may provide the necessary solutions to address the current educational crisis.
