Helene: Lake Lure, Chimney Rock making progress

Significant recovery progress from Hurricane Helene has been reported in Lake Lure and Chimney Rock, as noted in an interview with North Carolina Congressman Tim Moore. Lake Lure aims to reopen by the summer, while Mayor Peter O’Leary of Chimney Rock hopes for a temporary reopening of the state park, which suffered severe damage.

O’Leary stated that seven businesses were completely destroyed and that damage extended along the river to Lake Lure, impacting docks, boats, and structures. He described scenes of water flowing deep and debris covering Main Street during the storm. The Chimney Rock park bridge was washed out, causing the park to close, but a temporary opening is anticipated.

In Lake Lure, debris has been cleared, but silt removal is still needed. Recovery from the hurricane, which caused about $53 billion in damage and 104 deaths in North Carolina, continues into its 19th week after making landfall on September 26.
