On February 4, 2025, California Democrats passed a $50 million bill to oppose President Donald Trump’s agenda. The bill received significant criticism and mockery. Initially delayed in the State Assembly, the bills have now moved to Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk for approval.
The funding will mainly support legal challenges against Trump's policies. Of the total amount, $25 million will be allocated to the California Attorney General's office and the California Department of Justice to address the federal government’s actions. The other $25 million will go to organizations that offer legal assistance to undocumented immigrants and immigration-related groups.
Republicans attempted to amend the bills to prevent funding for the defense of illegal immigrants who committed further crimes in the U. S. , but Democrats turned down these proposals.
These bills emerge while Southern California is still recovering from devastating wildfires that caused about $275 billion in damages and resulted in nearly 30 fatalities. Despite the bills' anti-Trump sentiment, the California government is expected to seek substantial federal aid from the Trump Administration for the wildfire recovery efforts.
