State of the Union, Prequel

I’m planning to post some analysis of the President’s State of the Union speech tomorrow night following its presentation, but before that, here are some thoughts about why this year’s speech is particularly noteworthy.

When it comes to the intersection of politics and economics, a confluence of events have made the present moment a unique one.  It is a  moment when the structure of our economy and the basic principles and values that underlie that structure are of great concern to large numbers of people.  The rise of issues like financial instability, excessive income inequality, insufficient economic mobility, fairness in the tax structure, the loss of manufacturing work, the role of globalization, the impact of Keynesian stimulus—are all much more present in the echo chamber of national debate then they’ve been in my lifetime, and I’m kinda old.
