It was mildly surprising when the Congressional Budget Office
announced this week that the Affordable Care Act will result in some 2.5
million fewer Americans working than otherwise. What was shocking was
that the Obama administration response revealed that the president is
simply indifferent to whether you have a job or not. In the new
Newspeak, a job equals confinement and unemployment is liberation.
If, as a senior White House official said, the news “reflects the fact that workers have a new set of options and are making the best choices that they can choose to make for themselves given those options,” wouldn’t it make sense to free even more workers from the tyranny of employment, say by offering permanent gold-plated unemployment benefits to all who seek them?
By the administration’s logic, an unemployment rate of 20, 50 or even 100 percent would be nothing to worry about, and might even be worth a hearty cheer, provided those who were unemployed were simply choosing not to work rather than being rejected by employers.
