‘Medical Error’ Led to Death of 6-Year-Old Who Developed Pneumonia After Measles Diagnosis

A tragic case has emerged involving a 6-year-old girl in Texas who died after developing pneumonia following a measles diagnosis. Medical experts have determined that her death was due to a "medical error," specifically relating to the failure to provide the correct antibiotic in a timely manner.

• The child's parents have shared her medical records through Children’s Health Defense (CHD) to raise awareness and prevent similar incidents.

• Dr. Pierre Kory, despite his background in critical care medicine, reviewed the case and stated that the child had a secondary bacterial pneumonia that resulted from a medical error rather than the measles itself.

• Upon admission to the emergency room, the girl received an inappropriate antibiotic. While one antibiotic was suitable (ceftriaxone), the expected second antibiotic (azithromycin) was not provided at the time, leading to a failure in treating her pneumonia effectively.

• The medical records revealed a delay of over two and a half days before the appropriate antibiotic was administered, by which time the girl was significantly deteriorating and had to be placed on a ventilator.

• Following her test results, the correct treatment was only initiated after considerable delay, resulting in her subsequent death within 24 hours.

• The girl’s father emphasized that his intention in sharing these details was not to fuel divisive debates about vaccines but to advocate for awareness around the complexities of treatment and the importance of timely medical care.

This case highlights critical issues within healthcare practices surrounding the treatment of infections. The family aims to ensure that this situation serves as a cautionary tale to encourage proper medical care and timely intervention for other affected children, amidst the ongoing dialogue about measles and vaccination.
