Seattle nonprofit will bus advocates to Spokane to campaign for local progressives

The Seattle-based nonprofit Washington Bus is organizing a trip to Spokane to support progressive candidates in the upcoming local elections. The initiative aims to mobilize young voters and increase awareness of statewide issues.

• Washington Bus is a nonprofit promoting political engagement among young adults in Washington. It operates a fellowship program paying $18.50 an hour for participants aged 18-25 and endorses candidates through its 501(c)(4) organization while maintaining a separate 501(c)(3) for educational purposes.

• The planned trip to Spokane from October 17 to October 19 includes transportation, lodging, and food for volunteers who will canvass on behalf of several candidates, including Sarah Dixit and Kate Tellis, both running for local council seats.

• Spokane Councilmember Zack Zappone commented on the lack of robust representation from statewide organizations in Spokane and emphasized the importance of connecting local citizens with these groups.

• The trip has sparked criticism from opponents, particularly Christopher Savage, who argues that outside support undermines local representation in elections. He highlighted the financial backing his campaign receives from local donors, contrasting it with the support Zappone receives from Seattle sources.

• Councilmember Paul Dillon, associated with WA Bus, confirmed his long-standing involvement with the organization, which supports candidates through canvassing efforts to build a progressive local government.

The Washington Bus initiative aims to enhance political involvement among young voters in Spokane through direct engagement and support for progressive candidates, amidst discussions on the influence of outside funding in local elections.
