Donald Trump gets NATO members to spend more on defense

President Trump's intense pressure on fellow NATO member countries to spend more on defense paid off Thursday with countries committing to spend $33 billion this year.

NATO members also committed to accelerating the timetable to reach the agreed upon spending level of 2 percent of GDP, Mr. Trump said at a press conference at the NATO summit in Brussels.

Mr. Trump stressed that the U.S. remained committed to NATO and that he was pleased that allies committed to treating the U.S. more fairly.

Mr. Trump called the press conference after an emergency meeting of NATO members where the burden-sharing issue was hashed out.

The 29 NATO member countries agreed in 2014 that all should spend at least 2 percent of GDP on defense at least by 2024.

The U.S. spends about 3.6 percent on NATO defense.

Mr. Trump said the U.S. contribution accounts for 90 percent of NATO military spending, but the alliance pegs the level at about 67 percent.
