Karen Bass' Destroyed Text Messages Have Miraculously Reappeared

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass faced significant backlash due to her actions during a catastrophic fire event in January 2025. The wildfires are expected to be the most expensive natural disaster in U. S. history, with damages estimated between $164-250 billion.

1. Timing of the Trip: Bass was out of the country in Ghana for a presidential inauguration when the wildfires broke out on January 7, 2025. Critics questioned her decision to be away during such a critical time.

2. Communication Issues: While in Ghana, Bass claimed to stay in touch with her staff regarding the wildfire response. However, it was reported that records of her communication were initially missing or deleted, raising concerns about transparency and compliance with public records laws.

3. Text Messages Released: After a California Public Records Act request, text messages were eventually recovered and released. These messages indicated that Bass had difficulty communicating during the emergency and highlighted her frustration in trying to connect with her team from the air.

4. Responses from Officials: In her texts, Bass sought updates on damages, including inquiries about affected schools. Despite her assertions of being engaged, many saw her absence as detrimental to the city’s response to the crisis.

5. Public Backlash: Following the events, Bass publicly admitted that her trip was a mistake as it did not pertain to city business. Some believe this missed opportunity has harmed her political career and reputation.

Mayor Karen Bass’s handling of the wildfire crisis, particularly her absence during the emergency and subsequent communication failures, has led to widespread criticism. Although her previously deleted text messages were recovered, they did not alleviate the concerns regarding her effectiveness as a leader during a critical situation.
