As the federal government shutdown reaches one week, House Speaker Mike Johnson is urging Democrats to support the Republican funding bill to avoid serious harm to the U. S. economy. He warned that the ongoing shutdown could cost the economy approximately $15 billion per week and lead to 750,000 furloughed federal workers, with an additional 43,000 private sector job losses.
Congress has two proposals: a Republicans’ clean Continuing Resolution for seven weeks and a Democrats’ $1.4 trillion spending bill. Democrats oppose the Republican plan due to concerns it does not address expiring Obamacare Premium Tax Credits, which could raise health care costs.
At least eight Senate Democrats are needed to pass the Republicans' plan, but current support stands at only three. A vote on both proposals may occur Tuesday evening.
