Congress unmoved by imminent government shutdown threat

The federal government faces a shutdown in four days due to a stalemate between Republican and Democratic leaders over funding proposals.

1. Competing Proposals: Two Continuing Resolutions (CR) are proposed. Republicans suggest a CR to extend funding until Nov. 21, including security funds, while Democrats want a shorter extension until Oct. 31 with health care provisions costing up to $1.4 trillion.

2. Party Positions: While the Republican CR has passed the House, Democrats oppose it for not addressing the potential increase in health care premiums due to the expiration of the COVID-19 era expansion of the Obamacare Premium Tax Credit.

3. Accusations and Statements: Senate Majority Leader John Thune criticizes Democrats for not supporting the bipartisan option and claims they are "hijacking" the funding process. Meanwhile, President Trump blames Democrats for the possible shutdown, asserting negotiations are unproductive.

4. Democratic Readiness: House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries states that Democrats are ready to negotiate but will not agree to the Republican approach without addressing health care concerns.

As the deadline approaches, bipartisan compromise remains elusive, putting government operations at risk.
