Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy withdraws $679M in funding for ‘doomed’ offshore wind projects – including three in NY, NJ and CT

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced the cancellation of $679 million in federal funding for 12 offshore wind projects, which he described as “doomed. ” This decision affects projects in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

• The funding withdrawn includes:

• $10.5 million for Connecticut's Bridgeport Wind Port project.

• $20.5 million for New Jersey's Paulsboro Wind Port.

• $48 million for Staten Island's Arthur Kill Terminal.

• The Trump administration plans to redirect these funds toward infrastructure improvements and strengthening the maritime industry.

• Duffy criticized previous administrations for spending taxpayer money on projects he believes do not provide sufficient value.

• President Trump has publicly condemned offshore wind projects, stating they are detrimental to the environment and property values.

• Challenges in New Jersey's offshore wind plans have arisen, with a Danish company halting two projects despite receiving substantial subsidies.

• The Arthur Kill Terminal project has been delayed due to a halt in permitting by the Trump administration, and it was expected to create 750 jobs once operational.

• The Department of Transportation announced that it will seek to reallocate funding towards essential port upgrades and infrastructure needs.

The Trump administration has shifted its focus away from offshore wind projects to prioritize maritime industry growth and traditional energy sources, citing concerns over the impact and effectiveness of wind energy initiatives.
