Minnesota Children’s Hospital Snubs Trump’s Executive Order, Will Resume Sex Change Procedures on Minors

The Minnesota Children's Hospital has announced its decision to resume sex change procedures for minors, despite a federal executive order from President Trump that bans such practices. This action follows a recent court ruling against the executive order, allowing the hospital to proceed with its Gender Health Program.

• Trump’s Executive Order: In January, President Trump signed an executive order titled “Protecting Children from Chemical and Surgical Mutilation,” aiming to restrict sex change procedures for minors by cutting federal funds to facilities that perform them.

• Legislative Efforts: Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene previously led an effort to pass the Protect Children’s Innocence Act, which would criminalize sex change surgeries and hormonal treatments for minors. However, the Senate did not vote on this bill.

• Court Ruling: A federal judge ruled that the Trump administration did not have the authority to enforce a ban on gender-affirming care for minors due to a lack of congressional support, enabling states to continue offering these services.

• Resumption of Services: After pausing procedures on February 27 due to federal sanctions, Children's Minnesota has resumed all services in its Gender Health Program, which includes prescribing puberty-suppressing medications and hormones for those under 18.

• Response from Children's Minnesota: A hospital spokesperson stated that their mission is to provide evidence-based healthcare to transgender and gender-diverse youth, indicating that their decision was necessary for the health of their patients.

• Ongoing Legal Challenges: The Trump administration is also involved in a lawsuit against Minnesota for allowing boys to compete in girls’ sports and access girls’ restrooms, reflecting the ongoing tensions surrounding gender identity issues.

Children's Minnesota is moving forward with its gender health services for minors after a court ruling undermined the enforcement of Trump's executive order banning such practices. This decision highlights the continuing debate over transgender care for youth amid conflicting political and legal landscapes.
