Stacey Abrams’s New Georgia Project Shutters After Copping to Illegal Campaign Activity

The New Georgia Project, a voter registration charity founded by Stacey Abrams, has announced its closure following significant legal and financial issues. The organization was previously seen as a key player in boosting Democratic voter turnout in Georgia.

• Admission of Illegal Activity: The New Georgia Project confirmed in January 2025 that it broke 16 state laws during the 2018 gubernatorial campaign by illegally supporting Stacey Abrams's candidacy. The group agreed to pay a $300,000 fine.

• Financial Struggles: Since its inception in 2014, the organization faced continuous financial difficulties. It reportedly mismanaged over $81 million, receiving funds from major left-leaning groups. This mismanagement included attempts to purchase a property worth $2.45 million, which ultimately fell through.

• Leadership Issues: The organization encountered a leadership crisis, losing half of its senior team and firing its chief financial officer due to concerns over financial integrity. In the wake of these issues, senior members were let go, leading to operational disruptions.

• Political Context: The New Georgia Project had been a vital part of Abrams's efforts to gain support for Democratic candidates, particularly in Georgia. Though Abrams lost the 2022 gubernatorial race by a significant margin, the project has contributed to her political narrative.

• Legal Controversies: Abrams also established Fair Fight Action to address voting rights issues, which faced legal challenges, including a federal court ruling that required the organization to cover more than $200,000 for state legal fees after failing to prove allegations of voter disenfranchisement.

The dissolution of the New Georgia Project marks another setback for Stacey Abrams, who is known for her efforts in advocating for voting rights and fighting against perceived election injustices. Despite the challenges faced by the organization, Abrams continues to maintain her prominence in Democratic circles and is reportedly considering a third campaign for Georgia governor in 2026.
