Illegal border crossings drop to lowest level since 1970: ‘Most secure border in American history’

In fiscal year 2025, illegal crossings at the US-Mexico border reached their lowest point in 55 years. Federal data reveals a significant drop in apprehensions, highlighting changes in border security measures and political implications regarding immigration policy during different administrations.

• Apprehension Statistics: The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported 237,565 migrant apprehensions for the year ending September 30, 2025. This is the lowest total since 1970 when 201,780 migrants were caught.

• Comparison to Previous Years: The 2025 figure represents an 87% decrease from the four-year average of approximately 1.86 million apprehensions.

• Secured Border Claims: DHS Secretary Kristi Noem claimed that these numbers indicate the “most secure border in American history,” emphasizing record-low apprehensions.

• Apprehension Timing: Most illegal crossings in 2025 occurred in the last months of President Biden's administration, where an average of 2.4 million migrants entered the US illegally from 2021 to 2024. In the first quarter of 2025 under Biden, 172,026 individuals were apprehended, constituting 72% of the year's total.

• Trump Administration Actions: Following Biden, during the first eight months of the Trump administration, 65,539 apprehensions were made, accounting for 27% of the total. Trump implemented strong border control measures, including deploying troops and changing immigration policies.

• Migrant Releases: For September 2025, authorities reported that no migrants apprehended were released into the US, a stark contrast to the previous year when over 9,000 were released during the same month.

• Ongoing Deportations: The Trump administration is on track to deport around 600,000 illegal migrants this year, with more than 2 million leaving voluntarily since January.

The decrease in illegal border crossings in fiscal year 2025 signifies a notable shift in border enforcement and immigration policy. Under the Trump administration, aggressive measures have been credited with achieving the lowest apprehension rates in decades. The contrast in policies between the Trump and Biden administrations offers a significant perspective on the ongoing discussions surrounding US immigration strategy.
