No deal in talks to avoid shutdown as parties blame each other

Democrats want up to $1.4 trillion.

The top four congressional leaders met with President Trump to discuss a government funding solution, but they made little progress, increasing the risk of a government shutdown on Wednesday.

• Negotiations between Republicans and Democrats have stalled since Senate Democrats blocked a short-term funding bill.

• Republicans proposed a Continuing Resolution to extend current funding until November 21 to allow time for budget discussions.

• Democrats oppose this plan, demanding that it includes health care measures, especially regarding the expiration of the enhanced Obamacare Premium Tax Credit. Their counter-proposal, which included significant health care spending, was also blocked.

• Vice President J. D. Vance criticized Democrats for linking policy disagreements to government funding and suggested that they should discuss health care in an open government context.

• Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed hope that Trump could help bridge the gap but emphasized the need for Republican willingness to negotiate.

• Senator John Thune accused Democrats of holding the funding process hostage, stating that they are the main obstacle to preventing a shutdown.

The conflicting demands from both parties have left the government funding negotiations at a standstill, raising concerns about an imminent shutdown.
