Pentagon's Bloated, Opaque and Undisciplined Budget Undermines our National Security

The Pentagon's budget is approximately $824.5 billion for the year 2024, but many aspects of spending do not contribute to national security, leading to significant issues of waste and inefficiency. Various investigations have highlighted systemic problems in Pentagon operations, which compromise the effectiveness of American military spending.

1. Wide-ranging Roles: The Pentagon has strayed from its primary mission of national defense, engaging in numerous unrelated activities, which are referred to as the “Department of Everything. "

2. Overclassification: The overclassification of information hinders audits and adds unnecessary costs that taxpayers ultimately bear. This also allows for undetected fraud, with reports indicating substantial losses due to inadequate reporting.

3. End-of-Year Spending: DOD has a troubling practice of spending large amounts at the fiscal year's end to avoid budget cuts. For instance, in September 2024, DOD spent $79.1 billion, including extravagant purchases like $6.1 million on lobster tails.

4. Wish List Budgeting: The Pentagon’s budgeting process includes an enforced “wish list,” leading to requests for funds beyond the presidential budget, resulting in unnecessary waste.

5. Lack of Congressional Oversight: At least $22.7 billion in Congressional earmarks lacked transparency and clear accountability, complicating the evaluation of budget allocations.

6. Review Lapses: A vast number of expense transactions, totaling $1.2 billion, were not audited due to lack of access by reviewing officials to relevant payment systems, leading to potential fraud and waste.

7. Price Overcharges: The DOD frequently overpays for contracts. An example includes a 7,943% markup on spare parts, reflecting poor procurement management.

8. COVID-19 Settlements: The Pentagon faces substantial payouts to service members discharged over vaccine mandates, significantly driving costs without underlying necessity.

9. Mismanagement of COVID Funds: Funds meant for pandemic preparedness were misused for unrelated military supplies.

10. Military Golf Courses: The DOD maintains numerous golf courses globally, which have incurred large renovation costs, raising questions about resource allocation.

11. Controversial Education Practices: The Department of Defense Education Activity has been criticized for promoting far-left ideologies in schools while wasting millions on ineffective contracts.

12. Ineffective Grant Monitoring: The DOD's lack of oversight on grant recipients led to significant financial waste.

13. Collaboration with China: American taxpayer funds have inadvertently financed research that aids China’s military advancements.

14. Unreimbursed Services: The DOD has provided substantial services internationally without proper reimbursement tracking, leading to a loss of funds.

15. Missing Equipment: Following troop withdrawals, the U. S. left behind unaccounted billions in military equipment, complicating future inventory management.

16. Contract Management Failures: Ineffective management of cost-reimbursable contracts has led to billions unchecked under DOD’s contract policies.

17. Deferred Maintenance: The DOD faces a $271 billion backlog of maintenance costs for aging facilities, undermining operational efficiency.

18. Foreign Procurement Issues: U. S. laws mandating purchases from American companies are bypassed through international agreements, potentially harming domestic industries.

19. Purpose-less AI Funding: A significant budget allocated to AI lacks clear direction, raising concerns about effective usage of these funds.

20. F-35 Program Deficiencies: The F-35 fighter jet program, projected to cost over $2 trillion, fails to meet performance targets, highlighting issues in procurement and readiness.

The systemic issues outlined reveal a culture of inefficiency and wasteful spending within the Pentagon. As discussions continue regarding military funding and expansion, it is critical for the DOD to enact significant reforms to effectively manage costs and better serve national security interests.
