Outage At Largest U.S. In-Land Refinery Sends Pump Prices Soaring In Midwest

BP's 435,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Whiting, Indiana, is facing a significant outage, with resolution expected within the week. This situation coincides with a busy travel holiday weekend, causing gas prices to rise in states like Ohio, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Although one oil-processing unit restarted recently, relief at the pump may not arrive in time for travelers.

Data from the American Automobile Association shows prices at the pump jumped as much as 27 cents versus one week ago.

• Prices surged by up to 27 cents in some states.

• National gasoline average remains around $3 per gallon.

• Gas supply issues persist due to maintenance at another refinery.

Elevated pump prices are likely to continue through the holiday weekend due to tight fuel supplies in the Midwest and Great Lakes region.
