Zohran Mamdani wants to spend $65M on trans medical treatment — including for minors — if elected NYC mayor

Zohran Mamdani, a candidate for New York City mayor, has proposed using $65 million in taxpayer funds to support transgender treatment, including for minors, if elected. This plan highlights his commitment to the LGBTQIA+ community.

• Mamdani's proposal includes $57 million for public hospitals, community clinics, and nonprofits, along with $8 million for expanded services aimed at assisting transgender individuals in New York.

• Announced after a Trans Community Town Hall meeting, the initiative is part of his broader effort to provide care and protection for LGBTQIA+ New Yorkers, particularly in response to challenges arising from the previous Trump administration.

• It remains unclear whether the funding will cover only medication or also gender transition surgeries.

• In light of recent issues where some hospitals, such as NYU Langone, paused gender-affirming care due to federal pressures, Mamdani plans to ensure compliance with state laws regarding LGBTQIA+ healthcare rights.

• His campaign maintains that protecting access to gender-affirming care aligns with the city's constitution and human rights laws.

• Mamdani aims to collaborate with state Attorney General Letitia James to investigate and hold accountable those hospitals denying trans youth healthcare.

• The proposal for funding transgender care is part of a larger agenda, which includes initiatives like city-run food stores, free buses, and extensive childcare programs, with estimated costs totaling in the billions.

• Funding for these programs would come from raising corporate taxes and imposing a flat tax on wealthy individuals, requiring state approval which may face challenges given Governor Hochul's resistance to raising taxes.

Mamdani's funding proposal for transgender treatment signifies a strong commitment to LGBTQIA+ rights, but concerns over the logistics, potential impacts on healthcare institutions, and necessary legislative approvals remain crucial as he competes in the Democratic primary against established candidates like Andrew Cuomo.
