There Is No Such Thing As A Free Grocery Store

Zohran Mamdani, the winner of the Democratic Party's New York City mayoral primary, has been criticized for his Marxist ideas of how to govern. He proposes establishing a chain of city-run grocery stores, focusing on keeping prices low and not making a profit. Mamdani's campaign literature is filled with empty leftist jargon, and he wants a pilot program of one store in each borough that builds on the feasibility study done in Chicago. However, the idea has been met with resistance from the CEO of the Gristedes chain, John Catsimatidis, who claims that if the city of New York is going socialist, he will close, sell, move, or franchise the Gristedes locations.

Erie, Kansas, is known as the "small town that saved its only grocery store — by buying it." The city took over Stub's Market in early 2021 after learning it was to close, but it was losing money almost every month. Mamdani claims his stores won't have to pay rent or property taxes, which will reduce overhead and pass on savings to shoppers. However, Mamdani's real-world experience is less than that of a typical high school student from flyover country. He has only managed to string together three years of employment before being elected to the New York state assembly in 2020.
