Oregon is considering a new bill, SB 1003, that would expand its assisted suicide laws, potentially affecting people from all over the United States.
• The bill could broaden who can prescribe lethal drugs, changing the terminology from “attending physician” to “prescribing provider,” which may weaken current safeguards.
• Healthcare facilities would be required to promote assisted suicide, informing patients of its availability before admission, increasing the possibility that vulnerable patients might choose death over care.
• The waiting period for assisted suicide would be reduced from 15 days to 7 days, and in urgent cases, lethal drugs could be given within 48 hours, potentially overlooking necessary evaluations for those struggling with mental health issues.
Oregon's change in law makes it easier for anyone in the U. S. to seek assisted suicide in the state. There is a call to action for people to oppose SB 1003 by submitting written testimony to lawmakers before the June 4, 2025 deadline.
