U.S. government employee arrested for attempting to provide classified information to foreign government

On May 29, 2025, Nathan Vilas Laatsch, an IT specialist at the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), was arrested for attempting to transfer classified information to a foreign government.

• Background: Nathan Vilas Laatsch, 28, was employed by the DIA and held a Top Secret security clearance. He had worked with the Insider Threat Division since 2019.

• Investigation: The FBI began investigating Laatsch after receiving a tip about someone offering classified information to a foreign government. Laatsch expressed dissatisfaction with the current U. S. administration in communications and indicated he was willing to share sensitive information.

• Classified Information Attempt: Over several days, Laatsch copied classified materials onto a notepad at work and later attempted to provide this information to a foreign country, believing he was communicating with an official of that government.

• FBI Operation: The FBI set up an operation in a public park where Laatsch intended to leave the classified information for retrieval. He deposited a thumb drive containing classified documents, including a personal message detailing the types of classified information he had accessed.

• Further Communications: After confirming the thumb drive's receipt, Laatsch sought compensation, including citizenship in the foreign country, for providing more classified information.

• Final Arrest: Laatsch continued to transcribe more classified information and was arrested on May 29 when he attempted to transmit multiple classified documents to the foreign government.

The case highlights serious concerns about national security and the integrity of government employees. Laatsch's actions were deemed illegal, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
